Celebrating 125 Years of the Junior League Movement
In 2026, the Junior League Movement proudly celebrates a remarkable milestone, 125 years of women coming together to lead, serve, and create meaningful change in communities around the world. What began in 1901 as a bold idea has grown into a global network of nearly 300 Leagues and more than 110,000 women, united by a shared commitment to advancing women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training.
The story of The Junior League began with one woman’s vision. Mary Harriman, a young philanthropist in New York City, recognized the power of mobilizing women as trained volunteers to address critical community needs. At a time when opportunities for women’s leadership were limited, she believed women could be catalysts for social change if they were equipped with education, structure, and collective purpose. Her vision sparked the formation of The Junior League, laying the foundation for a Movement that would empower generations of women to lead boldly, serve intentionally, and strengthen their communities.
Over the past 125 years, Junior League Members have shaped countless initiatives that address evolving community needs, from education and health to food insecurity, historic preservation, museums, support for foster youth, and civic leadership development. While each League reflects the unique priorities of its local community, the collective impact of the Movement is extraordinary. Millions of volunteer hours, transformative partnerships, and generations of trained women leaders have helped build stronger, more resilient communities across the country and around the world.
This anniversary year is both a celebration and a reflection. It honors the trailblazers who built the Junior League Movement, the Members who carried our Mission forward through changing times, and the Leaders who continue to shape its future today. It is also a reminder that The Junior League is more than an organization. It is a living Movement powered by passionate women committed to service, leadership, and collective action.
As Members, each of us plays a role in advancing this legacy. Our time, talents, and voices strengthen our communities and expand the reach of the Junior League’s Mission. Whether mentoring a New Member, leading a committee, serving in the community, or inviting someone new to experience the League, every action helps grow and sustain this powerful network of women leaders.
This milestone invites us to reflect on what The Junior League means to us personally and the impact we have made together. It also challenges us to look forward with confidence and purpose. The next chapter of the Junior League Movement depends on continued engagement, innovation, and a shared commitment to developing the next generation of women leaders to do a world of good.
As we celebrate 125 years of impact, leadership, and service, may we honor our past, lead boldly in the present, and work together to shape an even stronger future for our communities and the women who will lead them.
